KUCHING: Umno and People’s Progressive Party (PPP) should reconsider their plans to spread their wings to Sarawak, said social activist Wan Zain Syed Mohdzar.

The Malaysian Parents Consultative Association (Mapim) Sarawak chairman said the coming over of those two peninsula-based Barisan would only create divisions and frictions within the Barisan Nasional.

He said the state BN components namely Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) and Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) had proven they were still solid, based on the results of the recent state election.

“The law of the country, of course, does not refrain them from establishing their branches nor curtailing the freedom of association by any Malaysian as provided by the Federal Constitution in any part of the country, but being members of the coalition party at the federal level, they should have the courtesy to obtain agreement from the top leaders of state and federal BN prior to engaging in a membership drive.

“Otherwise the so-called complimentary gesture (of establishing their presence) may be translated as an act of backstabbing among coalition partners within Sarawak Chapter,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He said Sarawak BN under the leadership of Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud performed tremendously well during the recent state election even though SUPP was unable to secure most of its urban seats.

“In spite of the losses in the urban constituencies, Barisan Nasional still commands a two-thirds majority in the august House. PBB had secured a 10 per cent victory for all the 35 seats contested, proving that their local political might is unquestionable,” he said.

As such, he called on Umno and PPP promoters and supporters in Sarawak to stop looking for members at the moment even if the main purpose was to offer sanctuary to disgruntled members of component parties within the BN coalition.

“This double standard approach by both local promoters of PPP and Umno in Sarawak indirectly challenges the credibility of the coalition leaders who had the overwhelming support of voters,” he said. He was responding to attempts by Umno and PPP to register more members in Sarawak.

PPP claimed it has 29,000 members while Umno promoters claimed they have 100,000.
